Two interesting anecdotes

I am narrating two different anecdotes that actually happened many years ago during my younger days. It's interesting and humorous too. It also brings out the thinking and open expression of thoughts then. Our generation grew up in such open atmosphere making them more tolerant and better human beings. I am sure you too will enjoy it.

Honeymoon!

Croma        Tanishq        Nike

Many years ago, I had been to then Madras, now Chennai, to attend a conference. And I happened to be the youngest delegate, yet to reach my twenty. In a way, I was pampered by the seniors. There were delegates from all over India and a few from abroad. And amongst them was a retired major. He was erect, tall, fair, and had a big moustache and an impressive booming voice that attracted attention. In later years, he reminded me of Sam Manekshaw. He was a war veteran, had seen action in many foreign war zones in World War II and finally Indo-China conflict.

During the break from the routine conference, me and few young members were discussing everything under the sun. After his lunch, the major looked around, saw us talking, and joined us. He was quietly listening to the talk. After a while, the talk veered to wars. And who better to narrate than the retired Major? After talking about some actions and battles elsewhere, someone mentioned the India-Pakistan War. He laughed loudly and said, man, this is no war, the real war was the World War, full of action, bombing, causalities, and death at close quarters. I lost many of my friends, and I survived.

In the Indo-China war, we were not ready. India had got independence from the British in 1947 after the long freedom struggle and immediately had to take on Pakistan who tried to take Kashmir by force. India trusted China, which soon betrayed that trust. India was busy with nation building and never thought China would attack India. India responded with basic weapons and vintage World War tanks and artillary, and our forces were not trained for mountain warfare then. In later years, China tried again, this time, India responded bravely and gave China a bloody nose. After this, they realized it’s not easy to bully India. I am sure China will never venture into a full-scale war with India. On the lighter side, Chinese are small compared to our tall, robust, well-built Jats, Punjabi, and other soldiers, who can be very aggressive if provoked. I am sure these small guys won’t stand a chance.

He jokingly added, you know this India-Pakistan War is no war, it’s more like a husband and wife fighting during the day and sleeping together in the night as if on a honeymoon! There was laughter all around.

It’s like a big joke, the army fights, soldiers lay down their lives, capture enemy territory, and the politicians come into the picture, declare cease fire and the army withdraws to where they were earlier; what happens to the morale of the defense forces. Does anyone bother?

In the mid-seventies, a multi-national company in Mumbai, a major group of companies now—selected four-five smart engineers to be sent abroad for exposure and advance training for about a month. Of the four, one was a god-fearing, staunch Maharashtrian Brahmin, a strict vegetarian who hadn't seen or even tasted eggs. He had a tough time with his meals. After the training, they visited Germany on their way back to India.

Since they were busy with training and didn’t get much time to eat out or go sight-seeing in the UK, they decided to go around and have a meal in a restaurant for a change. They looked around for an Indian restaurant, not finding any, entered a German restaurant. They had a language issue, couldn’t read the menu, or understood the steward. Then they looked around and found a guy having something like pakoda with sauce and garnishing. It looked good and delicious. They pointed to the guy eating and asked the waiter, about it. He said something in German, which they couldn’t understand. Finally, it was decided that they would all have the same dish. Meanwhile, the others had beer, and the vegetarian had fruit juice. They were hungry and waiting for their special meal.

In the meanwhile, their meal arrived, and it was laid on the table. It looked attractive, colourful and delicious. As they were hungry, they started with the meal, which to them looked like pakoda. It was crispy, juicy, and tasty. They enjoyed it and were full and happy to have eaten out. They nodded at the steward and left. They walked towards their hotel, chatting and looking around at the sights of the city. Once in their hotel room, they changed and relaxed.

In the evening, one of them who loved the food they had in the afternoon tried to find out what it was. He was shocked and stunned to learn they had chunks/cubes of harmless snake, marinated and fried, which to them looked like pakodas. He shared this information with others. They all ran to the bathroom, trying to vomit. The strict vegetarian tried to push his finger in the mouth, trying to vomit. He was the most affected. They felt really crazy, funny and dejected at their ignorance. After this, they decided never to eat in any foreign restaurant. They survived on bread butter, rice, curds, and some snacks and chocolates.

Here's a word of caution for strict vegetarians. Check or ask before you order food or a meal because in some countries, eggs are used in vegetarian dishes as they're considered vegetarian. Also be careful about sweets and desserts, egg is added in some attractive looking dishes and tempting cakes and desserts. A smart vegetarian can tell from the smell if an egg is added to it or not. Life is tough for vegetarians in some countries as far as food is concerned. Take it into account when you travel.

On their return home to India, this incident spread like wild fire in the office. Their collegues stated in jest that the snake-eaters have come! Others were okay, but the strict vegetarian was very upset with himself. He said this training trip was great except for one big blunder. His parents asked him to pray and ask for forgiveness!

 Vastu tips for the kitchen

Booking.com        Foxtale        Wow

Normally, the woman of the house spends almost 70–80 percent of her life in the kitchen for her family. According to Hinduism, the Laxmi of the house spends a major part of her life in the kitchen cooking and feeding her family. As we all know, health is wealth. And she takes care of it, spending a lot of time there.

The kitchen, as per Vastu, is the source where food that nourishes the inhabitants of the home, is cooked. We look at this crucial area of the house and plan the right kitchen direction as per Vastu. The kitchen, today, is the hub of activity in a modern home. Kitchens are well-designed areas with the latest gadgets, where family members are seen cooking, bonding together, and even socializing with friends and family.

The right direction of kitchen as per Vastu is the south-east corner of the house, which is ruled by the Agni devta or Fire god. Thus, it is the ideal kitchen position as per Vastu shastra guidelines. The Southeast is the ideal direction for a kitchen, as per Vastu. However, if this place is not available to accommodate a kitchen, one can consider northwest but avoid north, west, and northeast directions. One can consider a southeast or northwest direction.

A kitchen in a north west direction is suitable for some people and their health, especially women. The direction is ruled by Vayu, air, or the wind god. Air works as a supportive element for fire. When designing a kitchen in the northwest, ensure that the southeast direction is also balanced. One should consider a kitchen in the south west direction only if designing it in the southeast and northwest directions is not possible. To rectify this Vastu dosha, place the gas in the southeast zone and colour the walls in yellow shades to balance the negative effects. Use minimal amounts of water inside the kitchen. Earlier, washing of utensils was done at a place outside the kitchen, some still follow this practice as maids wash the utensils in the bathroom. In apartments, a sink is fixed in the kitchen to wash the utensils. Times are changing.

It is important to consider Vastu guidelines when determining the location of your kitchen. Avoid placing the kitchen directly below or above the bedroom, pooja room, or toilets. Additionally, ensure that the entrance door to the kitchen is situated in the east, north, or west directions. Following these recommendations helps maintain a harmonious and balanced energy flow within your home.

While choosing the best kitchen location as per Vastu, the size of the kitchen is important too. It should not be very small. The preferable size is 80 sq ft or more. If the kitchen is very small, it can have a negative impact on the women of the house. The size should be such the person can move around freely doing the various tasks like cutting, kneading, mixing, cooking and serving. It’s said a bright, spacious and ventilated kitchen keeps the woman in good mood and that results in tasty and healthy food for all.

A clean, spacious, and clutter-free kitchen is a must for good health and prosperity. The kitchen must have windows, be airy, and have enough light. In order to avoid clutter and have ample space while cooking, the design of the kitchen should be minimal, with clean, simple lines. Storage space, as far as possible, should be on the west and south walls of the kitchen.

Water dripping from a tap or a leaking pipe in the kitchen, denotes that wealth is being drained from one’s life and should be immediately repaired. Always keep the rice jar at home filled with more than half for prosperity. Avoid keeping storage jars in old newspapers. Do not keep the dustbin in north-east of the kitchen and avoid cooking under an overhead beam.

If there is improper ventilation in the kitchen, it can result in major health issues for the woman of the house, or whoever cooks in the kitchen. In the kitchen, the right position of windows, as per Vasu, plays a crucial role in ensuring a positive atmosphere. A proper window, or air outlets in the form of an exhaust fan or modern chimneys, are important to suck the air out. With good light and air, the quality of the food becomes better. For windows in the kitchen according to Vastu, the best direction is in the east. An exhaust fan can be placed in the east. So, bring in a positive atmosphere in the most important area of your home. It’s said that the family that eats together, stays happy together!

Life in Germany, then!

He landed in Germany on a cold day and was accommodated in the company guest house till proper accommodation was arranged. After a couple of days, he was informed that an accommodation had been arranged in the same area, in a town little further away. This is a story or rather an experience of a traditional, religious and strict vegetarian family friend, an engineer, about his brief stay in Germany. His company had sent him for a refreshing crash course and a learning experience. It’s about all what he saw and experienced during his short stay there. The true experience was unique and also got an opportunity see the German lifestyle, behaviour and how practical they are in life.

It must be many years ago, about three decades ago to be precise; one of our family friends working for a multi-national company as an engineer in Mumbai was sent to Germany for a refreshing course and familiarization programme. He was a South-Indian, religious, traditional and a strict vegetarian. You can very well understand his apprehensions. He was getting a chance to go to Germany at company cost and stay there for a couple of months, with a provision, his wife could join him once he is settled there. Nobody would refuse such an offer. He was fine with everything the foreign country would offer, but for the food as he was a strict vegetarian. He was a bit worried, his friends calmed him by advising him to have fruits and rice and curds, and also carry some snacks while flying.

He landed in Germany on a cold day and was accommodated in the company guest house till proper accommodation was arranged. After a couple of days, he was informed that an accommodation had been arranged in the same area, in a town little further away. He felt nice as he would be living independently and free to do and eat what he liked. The appointed day he was driven along with his baggage to a home, a villa type one-storey house. He was met by an elderly man, quite jolly and smiling. He felt good and welcome. The elderly man and his wife stayed on the ground floor and told him in broken English, he can stay on the top. But added, he will have to shift after a day as the bathroom needed some fixing work to be done, and temporarily he can stay in a room on the ground floor for a night. Keeping his baggage in the room, he went to the first floor to have a look. It was cozy and decently furnished and kept closed as no one would stay there. But he was surprised to see the barren bathroom and gave a surprise look to the old man. The old man smiled and said, don’t worry, it will be ready by tomorrow. He wondered how the hell the bathroom could be ready the next day.

Since he was tired, he went to his temporary room, changed and relaxed. It was quite chill. The old man came into his room with a tiny glass and told him, it will keep you warm. He hesitated but the cold was getting severe, without thinking he grabbed the small glass and drank the content. For a moment he was stunned as he felt as if his throat was on fire and his body started to warm up. Felt much better, and wondered what was in that tiny glass. He assumed it must be some liqueur and started praying silently, Shambu, Shambu, God forgive me, I drank it as I couldn’t bear the cold!

After a while, the old man drove away in his small truck towards the town and returned back in sometime. He brought along pipes, fittings, taps, adhesive tubes which appeared like big toothpaste tubes and tiles. Wearing an apron over his T-shirt and jeans, he carried all the stuff along with his tool box and got to work. Though I was relaxing, heard noises from the top floor. I was curious to see what was the old man doing. To my surprise, he was fixing and connecting the bathroom concealed pipeline. He was doing it as a professional at work. When he saw me, he smiled and said your bathroom will be ready by tomorrow. Curiously I asked him, why not call a plumber, he looked at me and said, here it’s difficult to get them, have to go to town, and they are very expensive, so self-help is the best way to fix things. Once the pipes were fitted and checked for water flow, he started fixing the glaze tiles on the walls of the bathroom using the big flexible adhesive tubes, sharply cutting the tile edges with a cutter, wherever required. In a short time, he finished the tiling and I left. And he continued with his work.

Clovia        Simple Skincare        Wow

Next morning, I shifted up to my room on the first floor, he said all fine and ready, and he just cautioned me to use the bathroom after a couple of hours as a precaution. I saw the bathroom I was amazed at his workmanship. Looked like a professional job with all fittings, shower, lights and taps in place. I congratulated him, he smiled and left. He must have been in his late sixties or seventy. I wondered how a retired and elderly person could do such a clean job. It taught me a lesson. No excuses, self-help is the solution.

I was busy with my routine of going to the office in the morning and returning home in the evening. The old couple got familiar and friendly, asked if I needed any help. In the compound saw a nice car, as good as new parked in the corner for many days. When I checked with the old man. He said it’s my car, I haven’t used it for long, the reason being the flooring of the car is rusted and its dangerous to drive. I wondered if in India, one would repair the flooring and proudly drive around. Since it was expensive to dump it, he had parked it in a corner.

And I noticed every morning, a young couple would honk, they would wave at the couple and proceed. I took courage and asked the man, every-day I see a couple drive down, stop and honk, wave and go. He smiled and said, that’s my daughter and son-in-law who live some distance from here. They drive, stop and wave and go, which means we are fine and healthy. This is their regular routine and visit us on Sundays to spend some nice time together. This was another lesson, how to check and keep in touch with your loved ones without disturbing each-others privacy.

Germans are considered to be not the easily mixing type of people, they don’t even smile. Even if a stranger wishes or wants to check directions, they are not helpful, they just ignore and walk away. Maybe it’s the language issue or its their attitude. Many find the Germans cold and not friendly. Some even accuse them of a superiority complex and snobbish. And I didn’t mix much with others except those I was familiar with in the office. Most of the time I was busy with myself. Once my wife joined me after a month, things changed. Had proper cooked vegetarian meals. Earlier I survived on curd and rice and fruits. I had company, felt better and more comfortable.

After my wife’s coming, we were invited to some family gatherings. They understood India as the country from the land of Indira Gandhi. They were surprised that we were strict vegetarians and did not consume meat or even eggs. They were intrigued by the sari and how a woman could wrap it around move comfortably. They were curious of bindi, long hair and mangalsutra and wanted to know its significance. That was the time when Germans started knowing more about India, its culture and curious to learn more about Indians. And for me, after staying in Germany for a few months, learnt many things which we take for granted in India. Staying abroad, love for my country grew and felt proud to be an Indian. But also realized we had a long way to go.

Goa: An interesting talk!

Nykaa        Ajio        neuherbs

Late evening, I visited a quiet cottage of a traditional Goenkar who was busy sipping his Feni in the sit-out. He was my inspiration for the popular Pedro (Pedro’s words of wisdom and Smile with Pedro). He was fit and sharp for his age, looked good as before, and recognized me. He asked me to sit and said, Naikbab, I liked your Pedro. He’s almost like me.

As he was sipping, our talk veered to Goa, the good old times, and the present Goa. When I mentioned regular reports about bad roads, flooding during the monsoon, dirt, and filth around haphazard planning, and the old issue of commuting and taxi service. I could see him charging up. He started. You know Goa is slow in everything, and even the Goans are slow. Just look around; you will know what I am saying.

India got independence in 1947, and we got independence in 1961. India annexed Goa in a quick military operation, after years of diplomatic efforts to secure its independence from Portugal failed. The Portuguese ruled us, knowing we wouldn't fight them. They realized Goans are lazy and happy go lucky people. Some Goans love to think they are foreigners, different from other Indians, without realizing others have overtaken them.

The Portuguese main attractions were Goa and Mangalore, both on the west coast. And sea ports too. The Mangaloreans rebelled and attacked the Portuguese and drove them out. We let them consolidate in Goa. Mangaloreans don’t even remember the Portuguese rule, while we still remember them, and some Goans still believe they were good. This is our mentality. In Mangalore, old structures, churches, and a few cottages are the only remnants. The people don’t even remember the Portuguese. But here, some Goans still harp about the Portuguese and love to remember the Portuguese rule. And still clamor for a Portuguese passport. No Mangalorean will even think of it. That’s the difference.

Our leaders and politicians are so slippery that they quietly slip from one party to another party, where they find the grass more-green. How can you expect progress and development, good roads, hygiene, and planning from such leaders? Corruption is a major issue, be it construction, hotels, shacks, transport, or taxi service. They create a monopoly, and this gives impetus to malpractices and price rises. Outsiders know Goa for its drinks, fun, nightlife, music, and dance. Goa is much more, with a varied history, natural beauty, sunny weather, pristine beaches, folk music, temples, churches, forts, and great culinary experiences—Goan Catholic, Saraswat, and others. Goa is also called the Rome of the East. Most Goans will agree.

Re-filling his glass, he added, sometimes makes me feel like Goa is just surviving. Look at Dubai or Singapore, almost our size, and see where they have reached, and we are still struggling with the basic needs and requirements. It’s mainly because of Goans who are slow and tolerate injustice with their Chalta hai attitude. Goa needs new blood and young, educated people to take up the responsibility and take Goa to greater heights. Goa has great potential and needs to be tapped properly. Just big talk and false promises won’t do any good. Saying this, he continued sipping his Feni and asked me to join for dinner. I left, promising to join him during my next trip.

Chaos in Pakistan?

Chaos in Pakistan?

Some educated and well-informed Pakistanis speak out the truth, and they are labeled as traitors. They are not willing to listen to the facts, and anyone praising India’s progress and development is a Gadar in their eyes. According to them, they are Muslim, and Khafirs can’t be better than them. They still believe in Gazwa-e-Hind. Their main theme is that they are Muslims and have Jazbaa. They forget that in India, there are equal, if not more, Muslims than Pakistan. Their argument is that they are suppressed, tortured, and not free. They believe that Muslims will rule the world.......

Recently, general elections were held in Pakistan. It was literally a farce, with the results being delayed. Some say, Imran Khan’s PTI party has got a big chunk of seats, while others say Nawaz Sharif's party has rigged the results. Whoever wins or comes to power, nothing much will happen or change. The world is surprised at how the elections are conducted in Pakistan. Amid protests, the Election Commission of Pakistan has ordered re-polling in some constituencies following alleged rigging on February 8. Everyone knows that it's the Pakistani army that's calling the shots. The army is busy on various fronts, Afghanistan, Iran, internal strife, plus elections. In their hearts, they know India will not violate the ceasefire unless it is provoked or infiltration occurs.

Nykaa        SBI Card        Tanishq

Pakistan is in a state of self-denial. The masses still feel their country is number one and their army and ISI too is number one in the world. The Madrassa-educated masses see Islam in everything. They are not willing to hear anything negative about their country. The best joke is that they still believe their country is economically strong and Pakistanis are respected the world over. The masses' exposure to the world is poor; they are blind to truth and facts. Their IQ level and general knowledge are poor. The illiterate men are bad, and the women are even worse. They go to the extent to state all big countries have developed because they copy Islam. When asked, if others have progressed and why Pakistan is behind and begging from other nations, they have no answer. Or their favorite reply being, the world is trying to suppress Pakistan as it’s a strong and rich country with great talent and resources. This is laughable, and for Indians, it’s a regular dose of comedy!

Sometimes one gets the feeling they are living in stone age times. They believe in the propaganda and fake news dished out by their media. They are not even aware where they stand among other nations; how their green passport is almost at the bottom of the list, how their citizens and leaders are strip searched in foreign airports. And in Europe and America, Pakistanis claim to be Indians to avoid the insults and checks reserved for Pakis. They say this is all propaganda. One can understand this from illiterate or madrassa educated people, but many of their educated are far worse with fantastic answers. Seeing these people talk, I think the country will be the same for another 70 years. They see conspiracy in everything, be it education, trade, sports, defense, or the economy.

Kama Ayurveda        Nike        goibibo

Some educated and well-informed Pakistanis speak out the truth, and they are labeled as traitors. They are not willing to listen to the facts, and anyone praising India’s progress and development is a Gadar in their eyes. According to them, they are Muslim, and Khafirs can’t be better than them. They still believe in Gazwa-e-Hind. Their main theme is that they are Muslims and have Jazbaa. They forget that in India, there are equal, if not more, Muslims than Pakistan. Their argument is that they are suppressed, tortured, and not free. They believe that Muslims will rule the world. Others, Khafirs—Jews, Hindus, Christains, and Sikhs have no right to be there. Apart from self-denial, Pakistanis suffer from identity crises and have no history or historic heroes of their own to emulate. They are not willing to believe they are from the subcontinent, and their ancestors were Hindus, and they have been converted by force, cohesion, or greed. Their missiles are named after Ghori and Gazni, who attacked and plundered their land. They are their heroes, and so is their thinking. Such a nation will never progress.

Sajid Tarar, an American-based Pakistan political analyst, said, "I thought Pakistan was 50 years behind India, but now with India landing on the moon, launching its aircraft carrier, frigates, destroyers, and designing and manufacturing fighter aircraft, automobiles, trains, weapons, and other developments; I feel, Pakistan is 100 years behind India." Another knowledgeable and educated Pakistani admitted that after seeing the development in various fields like infrastructure, economic might, education, sports, industrial growth, the development of new cities, the launch of Magalyaan and Chandrayaan, and the mission to the sun, India is certainly over 100 years ahead of Pakistan. They must try to emulate this rather than propagate negative information about India. Pakistan media and anchors like Fiza, Naz, and others spread hatred and try to belittle India for some brownie points. They are making a fool of themselves. A friend who visited Pakistan some time ago said, the people love to bring in Islam everywhere and in everything. No wonder Pakistan is a hub of terrorism. Once they separate religion from politics and other things, then there can only be some hope for the country.

Barring a few, most of the vloggers on social media posting Pak reaction videos are themselves not well informed on the subjects; they don't do research; they just copy subjects from one another; they ask provocative questions, and the Pak masses make a fool of themselves by giving fantastic and funny answers. India and the world are laughing. Most vloggers are keen to garner more subscribers and earn some dollars. And the Pakistan media and so-called experts love to talk half-truths on a wide range of subjects, including Gaza, Kashmir, India, America, and the Muslim world, though nobody listens or cares for their views in these debates or discussions. They say Saudi Arabia or the UAE should not do this or that, should not favor India, Israel, or Afghanistan. Should these countries ask Pakistan to form their policies? What right does Pakistan have to talk about other countries and their independent foreign policy? They should be talking about Pakistan and how to improve their lot, control prices, and bring their economy back on track after surviving on begging from other countries and funds from the IMF. With this chaos going on, it will be an uphill task for Pakistan.

Will it be easy for Mody in 2024?

The answer is yes and no! Simply because, as per experts, in 2014 and later in 2019, the BJP won with around 36 and 38 percent of the vote share. The balance 60 percent vote share was fragmented among Congress and numerous other parties. It doesn’t require rocket science to conclude what will happen if these opposition parties join hands. Besides, Indian voters vote differently in state and central elections as the issues and demands differ.

There are rumors that all is not well in the party and that there is an internal rift within the party as some senior leaders are not in favor of Mody. See party member and critic Subramanyam Swami’s frank interview in a couple of social media channels, he openly talks about it and hits at the main stream media for not showing his views and discontent within the party. All this will not make it smooth for the party in the coming election. With their own governments in Northern states, others may get around 250–260 seats, hence, they need Maharashtra, North East, and Southern states for a clear and commanding majority.

Some argue, with the inauguration of Ram Mandir, it should be easy for the BJP. Again, yes and no! The experts say, due to Ram Mandir, 38 percent of the vote share may go up to 40 per cent, not more. And BJP doesn’t represent all Hindus. Only traditional Hindutva and BJP supporters will vote for them. The BJP won mainly due to the 60 per cent fragmented vote share which was spread among different parties. This in no way will be incremental to the BJP. Now people are aware of the role of mainstream media and are vary of fake news on social media. Change anywhere is inevitable and Congress learnt it the hard way in 2014 by being over-confident of a win and lost power.

In elections, it’s the will of the people. Remember Indira Gandhi, the all-powerful Congress leader? She was thrown out of power and again voted back to power strongly by the same electorate. One can’t under-estimate the power of the Indian voters, they are smart. They don’t forget the issues and promises easily and this reflects in their voting.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, either the BJP will win hands down or hop. The reason being that the BJP is not in power in all Northern states, like Punjab and HP, similarly, after the Manipur fiasco, there’s anger, and it won’t be smooth going in the North East. It's not in power in Bengal, and after the Yatra, experts say it won’t be easy in Assam as the CM’s loose talk has done more harm than good. So, the BJP will need votes from the Southern states where they are not in power. This makes it a tricky situation for Mody. And for Congress and opposition parties, it will be an uphill task for them to make an impact. And the story doing rounds is that if the BJP wins by a thumping majority, Modi will be back, but if they hop and scrap, someone else will take over the reins of the government.
