The retired person need not change his diet. Some doctors, dieticians and fitness guys recommend seniors to change from their regular meals to frugal meals by saying, skip this or that, eat this rice, eat those rotis, avoid this, avoid that. According to him, he suggests have your normal regular meal what you have been having over the years, if necessary, a little less quantity. Your body is used to that meal and works fine. Change in diet sometimes disturbs the metabolism of a person.
The normal perception is that when a person reaches 58
or 60 years old and retires from his job or profession after 35-40 years of
service, he or she retires from active life. It’s not right. He retires from
his job or profession, but everything else remains the same. He only does not
attend an office, workshop, or factory as earlier, so he has time to relax,
enjoy with his children or grandchildren, friends, and relatives, and do what
he missed or loved to do in his younger days but couldn’t due to time and
responsibility. The rest remains the same. But in most cases the person is made
to believe, once retired everything is over. He is not productive, and it’s
time to just watch the world go by. He must avoid an active life, lead a simple
life, skip regular meals, and have frugal meals to keep fit and healthy.
Slowly, the person gets a feeling he or she is unwanted and is a burden to the
family and society.
According to a US-based Indian doctor practicing there
for decades differs. He says, the person retires from his job or profession and
thereby has spare time to devote to the family and society. He is an asset with
his rich experience which he can share by writing or making videos or even
lectures. This helps the person to be physically and mentally fit and helps
society in general. He can join a NGO, organization or a charitable institution
and spend some time there by sharing his skill. He too feels he is wanted and
this is a big positive keeping him busy and happy.
He further adds, any person retiring from a job or
profession doesn’t mean he is retiring from life. Actually, everything else
remains the same, his activities, interacting with his friends, going out,
eating out, social meetings, etc., except he doesn’t have to attend office as
before. He must follow his normal routine, dress well and move around as
before. Some loosening exercise, walking, yoga is advisable. Remember aging
starts from the legs. A good bond with your spouse is needed as you will be taking
care of each other in the absence of your children. Sharing is bonding. Brief
holidays, seeing new places or visiting old friends does a world of good. If
you are spiritually inclined, visiting temples and holy places is a good
booster.
The retired person need not change his diet. Some
doctors, dieticians and fitness guys recommend seniors to change from their
regular meals to frugal meals by saying, skip this or that, eat this rice, eat
those rotis, avoid this, avoid that. According to him, he suggests have your
normal regular meal what you have been having over the years, if necessary, a
little less quantity. Your body is used to that meal and works fine. Change in
diet sometimes disturbs the metabolism of a person. Unless you have some specific
health issue then one may change your food habits. Otherwise continue with your
regular meals you have eating over the years.
For fitness, some brief loosening exercise is good, no
need to do strenuous exercise or go to the gym. Walking is essential as its
said, in seniors, problems start with legs and then proceeds up. If you are
fit, and moving around, all is well. Hence walking is a must preferably in the
compound, garden or open area. Don’t venture on the roads as its risky with
traffic and dust. If you are in control of your legs, you are in control of
your life.
With proper financial planning and saving in the
earlier years, if you are financially independent it would be an ideal
situation. Remember to keep the funds, assets and investments in your and your
partners name, don’t make a mistake to transfer them in your children’s name
while you are there. Once you are gone, automatically it will go to them. You
and your spouse will not have to depend on your children for anything. Spend
wisely, it will take care of you in your old age. Enjoy a trip, travel to new
places with your partner for a few days. It will re-energize your mind and body
keeping you fit and happy. Avoid taking any risks like running, climbing on a
stool or ladder and avoid walking on a wet surface, especially in the bathroom.
Finally, he recommends, think positive, keep yourself
occupied and don’t go to give people advice unless asked for. As far as
possible, you live separately will give you the freedom. You enjoy your privacy
and let your children enjoy their privacy. Don’t meddle in the children’s life,
they are capable of handling it themselves. In case they need any advice or
suggestion they will approach you. So don’t bother them by calling them often.
Remember, if your children are living faraway or abroad, they won’t be able to
visit you often. It’s better from time to time, message or inform them of your
wellbeing. Ideally its better if your children call to check your wellbeing.
This way you will have a cordial relationship with the children, their spouses
and grandchildren. This is a recipe for happiness in your twilight years.
