Jack Ma steps down

Jack Ma, or Ma Yun, is a Chinese business magnate, investor and politician. He is the co-founder and former executive chairman of Alibaba Group, a popular multinational technology conglomerate. Ma is a strong proponent of an open and market-driven economy....

Most people around the world have heard about Alibaba,  China’s e-commerce tycoon steps down. Jack Ma, chairman of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, calls it a day from his role on 55th birthday. He is also member of ruling Communist Party. He created $41.8 billion fortune during his 20-year rein at the company he founded. On being asked, he said – Before I am 70-years old, I can do something in other fields, in areas like education.

Jack Ma stepped down as Alibaba's chairman, handing the role over to the company's current CEO, Daniel Zhang. The transition was announced a year ago. As its CEO and now its chairman, Zhang has taken Alibaba's reins as it copes with a slowdown in China's e-commerce market after a decade of explosive growth

Ma will continue serving on Alibaba’s board until its annual general shareholders’ meeting next year. He also remains a lifetime partner of Alibaba Partnership, a group drawn from the senior management ranks of Alibaba Group  companies and affiliates that has the right to nominate (and in some situations, appoint) up to simple majority of its board.

Ma said in last year’s announcement that he plans for his departure from Alibaba Group to be very gradual: “The one thing I can promise everyone is this: Alibaba was never about Jack Ma, but Jack Ma will forever belong to Alibaba.”

Ma left Alibaba’s CEO position in 2013 and was succeeded first by Jonathan Lu. In 2015 Lu was replaced by Zhang, the company’s former COO. As its CEO and now its chairman, Zhang has taken Alibaba’s reins as it copes with a slowdown in China’s e-commerce market after a decade of explosive growth. The online retail landscape also now includes new players like Pinduoduo, which have gained an advantage by focusing on smaller cities, which are important growth markets for internet companies.

One interesting fact about the day Ma chose for his retirement as chairman is that it is Teachers’ Day in China. Ma is a former English teacher who is still nicknamed “Teacher Ma” and has said that he plans to devote time to education philanthropy.

A former English teacher earning $15 a month was rejected for almost every job including KFC where now he holds a stake. His company which had 18 people, now employs over 1 lakh staff. In 2014, Alibaba’s IPO was the world’s biggest at $25 billion.

In 2016, he emerged as Asia’s richest man but has now has been overtaken by RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani. Since taking over as executive chairman in 2013, Alibaba’s revenue has surged about 1,100 per cent to $56.2 billion in the year ended March 2019.

Alibaba, a $460 billion behemoth, is one of the world’s biggest e-commerce companies with a search engine and a bank. This does not include shares in the company held by his foundation, or value of stock he’s sold. The breakup of Jack Ma’s 5.3% holdings in Alibaba – Alibaba group holdings $24.1 billion, Zhejiang Ant Small & Micro Services $13.2 billion, cash and other amount $3.1 billion, Huayi Brothers Media Corp $66.1 million. Hon Kong Penthouse $36 million.

The joy of helping:

There is no greater joy than the joy of knowing one can make a difference. Giving is a privilege. It's one of the greatest contributors to personal happiness. It gives life a purpose and help build good karma, making you feel empowered. It not only makes you feel happy, it also has a healing effect.

Your helping hand may have touched someone knowingly or unknowingly. Knowing or even meeting whom you have helped, and seeing them improve their and their family's life is a satisfying experience. The acknowledgement and smile on their faces have a true healing effect.

Help the less privileged in a small way, like supporting education of children from poor family background. A small effort can bring about a big change. Empowering others to live their small dreams and aspirations is inspiring. You don't have to have lots of money to give. In fact you don't have to give money at all. You can give what you can, your time, kind or inspiring words or even guide them. And that means every one can make a difference.

Before the eighties, reading was a favorite hobby of the young and old, gents and ladies. Books were in demand. Many of the young and old were members of libraries and made it a habit to frequently go, browse through the books and get a good book to read  at home. It encouraged people to buy books. Many of them had a collection of books and a mini library at home or office. One could see people reading best sellers on the bus, train, taxi or in their vehicles.

Then in the mid eighties with the advent of colour television and other modern gadgets, reading slowly diminished. Computers, tablets, laptops and mobile came into the picture. Reading was forgotten. Things became easy with just a press of a button you could get information. And now in modern times click, press or swipe is the order of the day. People are busy with no time to read. With the disappearance of the books, reading has taken a back seat among the young and old.

Publication of books drastically reduced, prominent book shops are closing down as it’s no longer profitable business to sell books. Titles don’t mean much unless it is from a top or celebrity author. The sales of books have dwindled down to a trickle. The days of million copies of best sellers are a distant dream. Now with the coming of e-books, is the final nail on the coffin.

Now with new ideas and approach there seems to be a new interest in reading and books. A revival is happening. The young are once again attracted to the printed books. They are interested in buying books. Online buying has made it easy for people to browse, check and order the books. And it is delivered at the home or office. A decade to paint a bridge
The Oresund sea-bridge, 8 km long, linking Sweden with Denmark opened in 2000, and its 5-coat paint job has protected the steel structure from seawater and harsh weather for 20 years. Now engineers want to give it a fresh coat of paint but it’s not an easy task. Painting this bridge will take over a decade. The time needed to repair this bridge is 13 years. The surface area is 300,000 square meters.300,000-400,000 litres of paint will be needed to paint this bridge. This will protect it again for a few decades, given the harsh weather conitions.

Seed Paper?
As the name suggests, this paper contains seeds. It is handmade, using seeds and cotton. When you plant the paper, the cotton starts decomposing in the soil and the seeds germinate. It’s a innovative method to make tags, gifts and other items that grow into a plant.

The Americans in Afghan war

The War in Afghanistan, code named Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom's Sentinel, followed the United States invasion of Afghanistan of 7 October 2001, when the United States of America ...

Americans are keen to get out of war-torn Afghanistan and have started talks with Taliban. As America and Taliban prepare to sign a historic troop pullout deal recently; we look at the key figures regarding the cost and loss of personnel, defining the 18-year long Afghan war that could finally come to an end after a great deal of loss to life and property and a generation of Afghan people who have seen no peace but violence and destruction.

It began almost two decades ago. The US-led coalition war on terror in Afghanistan was launched on October 7, 2001 in the wake of the daring 9/11 attack on American, on American soil. It is now the longest war ever waged by America after the Vietnam war in the sixties.

The staggering cost of the war was beyond expectations. In September 2019, the Pentagon estimated the cost of US operation in Afghanistan to be $776 billion since 2001. But more recently, a study done by Brown University says the cost of America’s wars exceeds the Pentagon’s estimate. The Brown researchers say, the US wars on terror in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan since 2001 have cost $6.4 trillion.

The NATO alliance committed to the Afghan conflict in December 2001, but the US has provided the largest contingent. At its peak, the US had 98,000 troops on the ground. Now there are about 16,500 military personnel from 38 countries in Afghanistan. The Pentagon estimates that the total US deployment in the country is about 14,000.

The US has paid the highest price in terms of foreign fatalities in Afghanistan, with 1,909 troops killed and 20,700 wounded. UK lost 454 personnel followed by Canada 157 and France 89. The United Nations estimates that 32,000 to 60,000 Afghan civilians have been killed in the conflict that started in 2001.

The US and the Taliban have signed an "agreement for bringing peace" to Afghanistan after more than 18 years of conflict. The US and Nato allies have agreed to withdraw all troops within 14 months if the militants uphold the deal. President Trump said it had been a "long and hard journey" in Afghanistan. "It's time after all these years to bring our people back home," he said.Talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are due to follow. Under the agreement, the militants also agreed not to allow al-Qaeda or any other extremist group to operate in the areas they control.

How do the cruise ships mangage?

How do cruise ships on high seas feed their passengers? Feeding a shipload of tourists is not a simple task. Do you know the world’s biggest pizza joints are on the sea. Here are the logistics of two cruise ships, one small and the other, modern and extra large.

Symhony of the Seas
This cruise ship has capacity for accommodating 6,680 passengers and 2,200 crew members. The food consumed - 3,200 pizza slices per hour, 4,400 kg chicken per week, 60,000 eggs per week, 9,070 kg potatoes and 317 kg ice cream. 1.8 million litres of potable water used on the Symphony of the Seas daily.

The Viking Orion
This comparatively smaller cruise ship consumes 5,000 eggs a day, 4,000 cups of tea a day and 10,000 dishes are washed daily.

Managing the stock of vegetables, meat, spices, other ingredients and alcohol, cooking different cuisines, serving the meals to passengers and crew, and washing the utensils and dishes are no mean task. But the kitchen staff and crew manage it in clockwork precision, as breakfast, meals, etc have to be served on time, and round the clock. Now drinking water isn’t a problem for ships. They either distill seawater using their engine heat and steam, or use reverse osmosis.
