The nation is proud
of ISRO’s space programme and achievements. After ending 2018 with seven
successful missions, the Indian Space and Research Organisation has set its
sight on a busy 2019 with 32 missions in the pipeline in the coming months. The
Moon mission is a top priority this year while the human spacecraft flight
programme will be further developed, with ISRO announcing, it will send
humanoid robots to test Gaganyaan systems. Let’s look at what’s in store for
ISRO in 2019 and beyond….
The first on the
list is India’s second lunar project since Chandrayaan-1 about a decade ago. This
time an orbitor, a lander and a rover will be carried to the Moon. ISRO is
taking up bigger challenges with innovative technology and cost-effective
budget.
India’s second Moon Mission
Chandrayan-2 will
head to the Moon between January and February 2019.
*The GSLV-Mklll, an
indigenously produced heavy launcher, will transport several modules into
space.
*The orbiter will
circle the Moon at an altitude of about 100km and map its surface, look for
X-ray emissions and measure the abundance of water on the surface.
*The lander will
explore the surface 600km from the Moon’s South pole. It will measure
moonquakes and examine thermal properties of the surface. The rover will study
lunar soil composition.
Putting an Indian in space
Putting an Indian in space
India’s manned
mission is likely by December 2021 or early 2022. The entire initiative is set to
cost nearly Rs 10,000 crore.
In 2019, three sets
of rockets, crew and service modules for the human spaceflight programme will
be certified to transport humans. Each set will be used for three missions,
including two unmanned missions. ISRO announces the first such mission will
carry a humanoid robot to conduct experiments.
The spacecraft,
called Gaganyaan, will attempt to send three Indians into the low Earth orbit
for up to seven days. It is basically to test the capability of sending humans
into space and later outer space. The cabin temperature will be 23+-2 degrees
centigrade with Relative Humidity 40-65%. If all the parameters and technology
go as planned, it will provide a big boost for future space flights.
