Wikipedia is a free-access, free-content internet encyclopedia supported
and hosted by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Those who can access the
site can edit most of its articles. Wikipedia is ranked among the ten most
popular websites and constitutes the internet’s largest and most popular
general reference work.......
All internet savvy people have clicked
and read content on various subjects on Wikipedia. It provides vital
information on anything or any subject. Wikipedia, the internet editable bible
of everything, celebrated its 15th birthday with a new source of
funding to boost its cash corpus. $250 million has been raised by Wikipedia
already.
Wikipedia seemed like an impossible
idea at the time: an online encyclopedia that everyone can edit. However it has
surpassed everyone’s expectations over the past 15 years, thanks to the hundreds
of thousands of volunteers around the world who have made Wikipedia possible,
says Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia.
Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger
launched Wikipedia on January 15, 2001. Sanger coined its name – Wikipedia. Initially
only in English, Wikipedia quickly became multilingual. The San Francisco-based
non-profit Wikimedia Foundation which overseas the Wikipedia website, launched on January 15,
2001, has got a shot in the arm from the Wikimedia Endowment starting with less
than $1 million donated by the estate of Jim Pacha, a software engineer who
died in 2014, and aiming to accumulate $100 million by 2026. This will go
beyond fund-raising drives that have already poured $250 million into the
internet’s leading encyclopedia.
Over 18 billion page views
monthly make Wikipedia one of the world’s most visited websites. Nearly 36
million articles and nearly 80,000 volunteer editors make the website an
unparalleled online resource, the odd blips of inaccuracy notwithstanding. With
280 languages, make it a widely accessible platform for inquisitive minds all
over the worldwide web.
Interestingly, the page on George
W Bush has seen 45,862 edits, the highest for any entry.

New
Year celebration?
Do you know about the new year celebration? The first recorded New Year's celebration dates back 4,000 years to Babylon, when the first moon after the spring equinox marked a new year. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar created a calendar with Jan 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honour Janus, the month's namesake. Since then 1 January is celebrated as the new year day.
