Noodles in a hot knot!

Samples of Maggi noodles are being subjected to lab examination in several states - Odisha, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharastra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab among others......

Noodle is in the news in India. A batch of Maggie noodles was found to have lead and MSG beyond the permissible limit. Many states in India have put a temporary ban on the sale of Maggie noodles manufactured by Nestle’s which has 70 per cent noodle market share in India.

The story of instant noodles is interesting. The global demand of instant noodles is 102.7 billion servings of instant noodles eaten in 2014. On average, ever one on the planet ate 14 servings a year. Regardless of the demographic area, age and gender, instant noodles are loved as global food. In India, it’s a comfort food.

The per capita consumption of the top 3 countries, all in Asia are as follows: South Korea – 72.8 servings, Vietnam – 54.5 servings and Indonesia - 53.7 servings. And the per capita annual consumption is 14.3 servings.

The global demand in packs eaten in the world in a year is – China & Hong Kong – 44, 400 billion packs, Indonesia – 13,430 billion packs, Japan – 5, 500 billion packs, India – 5,340 billion packs, Vietnam – 5000 billion packs, USA – 4,280 billion packs, South Korea – 3,590, Thailand – 3070, Philippines – 2,800 and Brazil – 2,360 billion packs.

Samples of Maggi noodles are being subjected to lab examination in several states - Odisha, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharastra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab among others - following detection of mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) and lead in excess of the prescibed limit in the noodles.

It is said the controversy over Maggie noodles has only brought to the fore what is otherwise common knowledge in India - violation of safety standard in various sectors, especially packaged foods and drinks.

The book explores issues between siblings after their father’s death. It is a turning point episode in Ramayana that makes it very important. The book has simple verse which is exemplary writing. This makes it a great read. I recommend it those interested to know more about Indian mythology and tradition.
